Internship HBO/Master: Better particle settling in the THIOPAQ® biological desulfurization process

We are looking for an enthusiastic Student/Graduate (HBO/Master) for the following Internship Project:
Better particle settling in the THIOPAQ® biological desulfurization process
The goal of the project is to improve the settling behaviour of sulphur particles in the THIOPAQ® biological gas desulfurization system.
The THIOPAQ® process is used to remove Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) – a toxic and corrosive compound – from biogas and Oil & Gas streams. This allows biogas to be used as a fuel, upgraded to bio-methane, and injected into gas grids. Elemental sulphur produced by the THIOPAQ® can be used as a high quality fertilizer. One challenge in the THIOPAQ® is the efficient removal of the sulphur particles formed from oxidized H2S. Recent insights from the fundamental biochemistry of the process have shown that particular reactor conditions can improve the settling behaviour of these particles. This internship will be focused on testing the efficiency of applying such conditions in laboratory-scale reactors.
The following activities are expected to be part of the internship:
- Develop theoretical background: sulfur chemistry, kinetics, sulfide-oxidizing micro-organisms
- Write research plan, including safety aspects for lab work
Lab & analysis
- Operation and monitoring of continuous reactors and set-up
- Bio-chemical lab analysis of relevant parameters
- Data analysis, generation of mass balances, testing predictive models
- Final written report
- Oral presentation at Paques
Start: October / November 2021
Project Location: Balk, NL
Project Duration: 20 weeks, full time.
